Cal Women's Basketball: Jim Knowlton Made Up His Mind on Hiring `Pretty Quick

Jeff Faraudo

New Cal women's basketball coach Charmin Smith, detailing the timeline that led to her hiring, said she wasn't sure how long it took athletic director Jim Knowlton to decide on her after doing his "due diligence."

Knowlton, sitting to Smith's right at Tuesday's news conference, interrupted her and said, "Pretty quick."

Smith, who was coaching for the New York Liberty in the middle of the WNBA season, said her employers were entirely supportive during the fairly brief process.

"Then when Jim called and said, `Would you like to do this?' . . . did I let you finish your sentence?" Smith said.

With glee, she said, "Yes."
