Cal Women's Basketball: Kianna Smith to Louisville; SDSU Player Transfers to Cal
Cal women’s basketball program had one key player announce that she has transferred to another school, but the Beears also welcome in a transfer from another school.
Kiana Smith, a starter this past season who had announced a few weeks ago that she planned to transfer, has joined the Louisville program, Louisville announced Wednesday.
But San Diego State guard Naje Murray is transferring to Cal, according to an announcement she retweeted on social media.
Smith, who was a McDonald’s All-American in high school, started every game last season for Cal and averaged 9.8 points. Her departure means that four of the five starters from this season’s team are gone. At Louisville, she joins a team that was ranked No. 5 in the final AP poll and lost to Connecticut in the NCAA Elite Eight.
Murray, a guard, should be able to help the Bears offensively, although she will have to sit out the 2019-20 season as a transfer unless she can successfully petition to be eligible immediately.
As a sophomore this past season for San Diego State, Murray ranked ninth in scoring the Mountain West Conference, averaging 13.7 points per game. She led the conference in made three-pointers with 81, while making 35.4 percent of her shots from long range. She also led the team in steals, averaging 1.9 per game.
As a freshman, Murray was third on the team in scoring (9.3), second on the team in both steals (30) and three-point field goals (53)
