Charmin Smith was a member of the coaching staff of the WNBA's New York Liberty for just two-and-a-half months before Cal came calling.

But Smith says the experience was worth it.

She talked at her news conference this week about how, after 12 years as an assistant at Cal, she needed a fresh challenge. When she left for the WNBA she had no idea she would return to Berkeley to become head coach.

Now, as Lindsay Gottlieb's successor, Smith believes she has new strategies and practice tools that will benefit the Bears. She also says her time coaching the world's top female players will give her added credibility with her Cal players.
