Cal linebacker Evan Weaver has been getting a lot of preseason All-America mention from various college football magazines, but not every publication has the Bears’ senior star quite that high.

Lindy’s preseason college football magazine ranks Weaver as the eighth-best inside linebacker for the upcoming season.

That’s high praise, but not as high as Weavers got from Athlon, which named Weaver a preseason first-team All-American, or Street and Smith, which placed Weaver on its second-team All-America squad.

Here are the top 14 inside linebackers as ranked by Lindy’s:

  1. Dylan Moses, Jr., Alabama

  2. Joe Bachie, Sr., Michigan Stat

  3. Paddy Fisher, Jr., Northwestern

  4. Colin Schooler, Jr., Arizona

  5. Shaquille Quarterman, Sr., Miami

  6. Jacob Phillips, Jr., LSU

  7. David Woodward, Jr., Utah State

  8. Evan Weaver, Sr., Cal

  9. Troy Dye, Sr., Oregon

  10. David Reese II, Sr., Florida

  11. Cale Garrett, Sr., Missouri

  12. Markus Bailey, Sr. Purdue

  13. De’Jon Harris, Sr., Arkansas

  14. Mohamed Barry, Sr., Nebraska

Of Weaver, Lindy’s said: “Was second in FBS with 159 tackles in 2018, 229 for career.”

Not mentioned was that he virtually won the game against Washington last season, intercepting a pass and returning it for a touchdown in the 12-10 upset of the Huskies.

Two Pac-12 linebackers are on this list, but Weaver will face only one during the 2019 regular season. The Bears face Oregon and linebacker Troy Dye on Oct. 5 in Eugene, but they do not play Arizona, which is led by linebacker Colin Schooler.
