Cal Football Video: The Wit & Wisdom of Evan Weaver, Part 5 — High on Kuony Deng

Weaver anticipates the rangy junior college newcomer will make a huge difference on an already loaded defense

The high preseason ratings going to the Cal defense stem primarily from the quality of returning players the Bears boast. Those include linebacker Evan Weaver, already named to a pair of preseason All-America teams, and a dynamite defensive secondary.

Weaver believes JC newcomer Kuony (pronounced Coin) Deng will significantly add to the equation on defense..

“He’s long and athletic . . . (has) speed . . . a great mind for the game,” said Weaver, noting that Deng made “night and day” progress from the start of spring practice to the end.

Deng is 6-foot-6, 225 pounds and will be used primarily at inside linebacker. But the coaching staff has hinted he could also see snaps at outside linebacker.

As a high schooler in Virginia, Deng also played basketball. In the video above, listen to how Weaver says he would fare against Deng in a game of one-on-one.
