Cal Football Video: Senior Jordan Duncan Calls Freshman Spencer Brasch `Fearless'

Veteran wide receiver liked what he saw when he looked in the eyes of the Bears' rookie quarterback against Oregon State

Freshman quarterback Spencer Brasch never had a chance.

And no one -- starting with coach Just Wilcox -- had any complaints with his performance in a fourth-quarter pinch-hit role against Oregon State after Devon Modster left with an injury on Saturday.

Brasch, who was elevated to the No. 2 QB spot after Chase Garbers was injured and Modster became the starter late last month, was 2-for-6 passing for 24 yards with an interception and two sacks in two offensive series against the Beavers.

He took the field with Cal trailing 21-17 and completed his first career pass attempt, a decisive 17-yard strike to Nikko Remigio.

His third attempt was deflected at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by OSU's Jaydon Grant.

Brasch, a consensus 3-star prospect from Gilbert, Arizona, got one more chance, but never really had a chance. The Bears started their final possession at their own 8-yard with 57 seconds left and no timeouts remaining.

The outcome was predictable. Cal lost 21-17.

Wilcox said the coaching staff will continue to work with Brasch, but one of his teammates saw something he liked.

"He was fearless," said wide receiver Jordan Duncan. "I could tell when I looked in his eyes. He knew (he) had nothing to lose, everything to gain. He came out ready. He came out confident.

"He didn't come out there hesitant. He was just letting it ride."

Brasch passed for 5,522 yards with 78 touchdowns and just 13 interceptions over his junior and senior seasons at Higley High. His team was a combined 21-6 those two seasons, reaching the semifinals of the state playoffs both seasons.
