Cal Rugby Video: Bears Captain Nic Mirhashem Says National Title Is the Goal

He knows Cal must get past Arizona Saturday before worrying about possible semifinal matchup with rival Saint Mary's

Cal rugby captain and flanker Nic Mirhashem admits that the team's goal is a national championship, but he also realizes the Bears cannot look past Arizona in Saturday's 1 p.m. national collegiate quarterfinal game at Cal's Witter Field.

"We're going to continue to carry ourselves with a chip on our shoulder," he said.

Mirhashem, an American citizen who was born in Spain and also carries an Iran passport, has already played in three national championship finals and is hoping to make it four in his senior year. To get there the Bears would have to beat Arizona and then probably have to get past Bay Area rival Saint Mary's, which, like Cal, is considered one of the best collegiate rugby teams in America.

The potential Cal-Saint Mary's semifinal contest would be played next Saturday at Saint Mary's, assuming both teams win Saturday. BYU faces BYU in the other quarterfinal game Saturday at Witter Field.
