Tale of the Tape: Quincy Allen is a complete difference maker
Quincy Allen is the latest get for Tad Boyle as he continues to bolster the basketball future of the Colorado Buffaloes.
Boyle’s offense runs on selfless play, spacing the floor, athleticism, and shooting. Quincy Allen is a hand-in-glove fit.
The 6-foot-7 wing who will graduate from Maret School in Washington D.C. will graduate in around ten months and could make an immediate impact as a freshman when he joins the Buffs. With a quick release, the ability to score off the dribble or off the pass and the athleticism to finish at the rack, Allen could become a scoring machine and a matchup nightmare if he is willing to put in the work.
Teams around the country sought to add Allen to their roster including some of the best programs in the country such as Marquette, Florida, Louisville, Syracuse and Michigan. Instead of joining the ACC, Big East or Big Ten, Allen chose the Pac-12.
Tad Boyle’s recruiting approach could be compared to a chase down block. He isn’t chasing where the game is, he is chasing where the game is headed by aggressively looking to add players who not only have game but play his modern style of basketball and are ready to grind from day one.
Allen is now the second player in the top 60, alongside Lawson Lovering, to commit to Colorado and their plans to emerge as one of the powerhouses of the Pac-12. Lovering is ranked as the 52nd player in the nation whereas Allen is ranked No. 48. Both players can shoot but Allen looks as if he could be one of the best pure shooters in the country. Both players will be able to contribute to a hard to cover inside-outside style that is hard to guard.
Allen is very long for his size and will be a tough matchup for defenders who don’t have size and quick feet; sometimes a rare combination. On the defensive end, Allen could improve but has all the potential to become a terrific defender due to his bounce, length and timing. Allen’s ability to go up for the rebound at its highest point stand out on tape and show that with the right coach, he could translate into a two-way player with NBA upside.

For Buffs fans, signing a top 50 player in the country is huge. For the program itself however, signing Quincy Allen represents adding a much needed piece that could be the difference maker between being a good basketball team and a great one. Surrounded by athletic scorers, ball handlers, and the 7-foot-2 stretch five that is Lawson Lovering, Allen will provide space for those around him due to his gravity while also getting good looks due to the shooting and slashing abilities of his teammates.
The Buffs are building a team that will not be easy to play help-defense against. It is clear that many of these players cannot be left alone unless you are willing to surrender points in a hurry. Opponents may be picking their poison between Allen or Lovering, not to mention Colorado’s number one player in the state and four star incoming freshman Dominique Clifford.
Although Allen will not suit up for the Buffs till the 2021 season, the team being built is starting to draw attention as the Buffs hope to turn the corner with a deep tournament run. Tad Boyle is not messing around. Look for him to continue to pursue top-flight prospects that not only can ball but play Tad Ball.
