2019 UGA Football: Fall Camp Update, Kirby Not Happy w/ Temperament
Yesterday was the first scrimmage of fall camp, and with just 20 days before the start of the 2019 season in Nashville against the commodores, time is of the essence.
Kirby was not pleased with the temperament of practice yesterday. Saying that Friday's practice had much more energy and juice. He then went on to say that both number one units were "lethargic and had bad timing."
Kirby did share his thoughts about the second teams from both the offense and defense. He expressed that the first fall scrimmage is the coaching staff's first real opportunity to see one's vs. two's in a game environment and he saw some positive things from that second unit.
So, with the first week of fall camp complete, here are some of the young guys that are earning playing time for the 2019 season.
Dawgs turning heads in camp:
George Pickens, WR - Everyone, for the most part, knew about Picken's talent coming into Georgia, though some questioned his speed and whether or not he'd be able to separate at the SEC level. But he's come into camp this fall as a true freshman and further cemented that he is likely to be Georgia's next phenom at the wideout spot. Don't believe me? He did this yesterday in the scrimmage.
Easy to see why Richard Lecounte compared him to a guy by the name of A.J. Green, huh?
Azeez Ojulari, OLB - Azeez redshirted last season, (despite playing in three games as a true freshman, remember that cool new NCAA Redshirt rule?) after coming out of Marietta high school, where he played the bulk of his snaps as a defensive end. However, Mr. Ojulari has since found the weight room. Big time. And likely leads the race to start at OLB for Georgia on the opening weekend against Vandy. Kirby has even moved Ojulari into more of a leadership role, sending Azeez to the media room Thursday to speak on behalf of the defense for the first time.
Zamir White had (2) ACL Tears in less than 12 months.
Zamir White, RB - It's official, the Zeus is loose in Athens. The nation's #1 back from 2018 has now gone through a week of full-speed practice at Georgia and can officially be declared back. There hasn't been a player at UGA this fall camp that's had more buzz surrounding his name than Zamir. Yesterday, Kirby Smart was asked about the running back from North Carolina. "When you see a guy going through what he has been through, who isn’t pulling for Zamir White?” Smart said. “Every guy on our staff and every player on our team has seen his ups and downs and the rehab he has done."
He continued, " I think for defensive players, it’s hard to pull for him because you have to tackle him. It’s not easy to tackle him, because he is a full-grown man."
Tyrique Stevenson, DB - "Holy moly! We got a ballplayer!" that was Dan Lanning's immediate response to watching Tyrique "The Freak" Stevenson in his first week of fall practice as a Georgia Bulldog. The 4-star defensive back from Homestead, Florida is an extremely intriguing prospect in the sense that he covers like a corner, hits like a linebacker, and has the playmaking abilities comparable to the best of them.
