Georgia Football: Lawrence Cager played great, but the leadership is what stood out

Sure Lawrence Cager had 5 catches for 82 yards and pivotal Touchdown late for Georgia, but it was his leadership that stood out most on Saturday.

It takes athletes that are primed for big moments to be successful in matchups like Saturday's game against Notre Dame.

Players like Jake Fromm, fearless under pressure, tasked with leading a pro-style offense and asked to complete tight window throws throughout the football game. Fromm literally laid everything on the line, diving for a first down headfirst only to come up short.

Players like D'Andre Swift who run with passion and anger towards the opponent, constantly wearing down defenders, dazzling and electrifying the crowd as he hurdles defenders.

And sure, the 5 catches and 82 yards along with the most important touchdown of the game were all vitally important contributions from Lawrence Cager. But during the key late third-quarter drive that culminated with Cager's TD catch, there was a moment when D'Andre Swift was beginning to get into an altercation with a Notre Dame defender.

Cager immediately grabbed the Junior running back and pulled him off to the side to calm him down, waving off coaches and assistants, successfully handling the situation himself.

It's something we asked Cager after the game:

"I just think I bring experience, Coach Smart has stressed to me to bring the leadership part. So just saying, We don't need any dumb penalties right now, it's gonna hurt the team. I know we are fired up, but we gotta bring it down."

It's that type of leadership that the graduate transfer from Miami brings to the table, despite being one of the newest members of the Georgia program. But he's no stranger to big games. Cager was apart of the Miami team that beat Notre Dame in that 2018 matchup on Gameday.
