News & Views: Miller Was Right, Because Winning Isn't Easy

Tom Brew

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Some random thoughts before Indiana takes on Troy Saturday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

Here are some news and views:

NEWS: Being favored by 25 points in a college basketball game in November doesn't guarantee victory.

VIEWS: I'll admit it, and rolled my eyes a bit earlier this week when Indiana coach Archie Miller was talking after the North Alabama game about how hard it is to get a win. Then I saw No. 1 Kentucky lose to Evansville a few hours later and thought to myself, darn, Archie is right.

I've certainly been critical of Indiana's November schedule, which included seven homes, six against teams ranked No. 200 or worse in the kenpom.com national rankings. Indiana has been favored by around 21 points in all three wins so far, and they've won relatively easy all three times. Saturday night shouldn't be much different.

So after seeing Kentucky go down, I will at least give the Hoosiers a little more credit for being 3-0 so far.

NEWS: Indiana's roster from one through 11 is solid, and everyone will contribute.

VIEWS: Miller has been talking about that from Day 1, and we really saw that in the win against North Alabama, where Jerome Hunter and Damezi Anderson both scored in double figures from the wings.

Miller has talked about Hunter really being a true freshman this year because he wasn't even able to practice at all last year while he dealt with a serious leg injury. Anderson never got much of a run, either, so any contribution from them really makes this team better

NEWS: Indiana's three commitments all signed this week, and the Hoosiers' class is currently ranked No. 20 in the country.

VIEWS: That's all good, I'm thrilled to have Anthony Leal, Trey Galloway and Jordan Geronimo join the Hoosier Nation. Obviously, though, all eyes are on Dawson Garcia this week, as the 5-star big man makes a decision between Indiana and Marquette, more than likely.

His family loved his visit here, and so did he. Signing him would give Indiana a top-10 class more than likely, and that really needs to be the goal in recruiting every year for the Hoosiers.
