Scott Satterfield said his team is a work in progress.

Louisville football’s 45-10 loss to third-ranked Clemson showed as much.

After Louisville had consecutive conference wins for the first time since 2017, the Cardinals were reminded how much of a talent disparity exists between them and the best team in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Clemson, the reigning national champions, extended its winning streak to 22 games.

The Tigers have won 16 straight conference games.

“They [Clemson] are the standard right now, they are the national champion, they’ve won 22 straight, that’s where you want to be,” Satterfield said. “I told our team that. That’s what we want to be and it takes a lot of work to get that.”

The Cardinals played a competitive first half, but missed several scoring opportunities. Louisville trailed 10-3 before Clemson scored five seconds before halftime to take a two-touchdown advantage. Clemson scored 21 points in the fourth quarter for a 35-point victory, the Tigers sixth win this season by 14 points or more.

The team isn’t where Satterfield wants it to be, he has seen signs of progress.

“We’re always going to strive to be better,” Satterfield said. “Are we better now than we were when we first started? I think so. I certainly think we are. We’ve continued to get better each and every week.”

He hopes his team can bounce back against Virginia next week.

“We had a lot of adversity, so how are we going to come back from that?” Satterfield said. “I think that’s the true measure of a team.”
