The #9 Michigan State Spartans saw their record on the year improve to 24-6 (15-4) with a 91-76 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

The Spartans were led by the amazing Kenny Goins who had 24 points and eight rebounds. Matt McQuaid had 22 points, five assists and four rebounds. Aaron Henry had 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. Xavier Tillman rounded out the Spartan double-digit scorers adding 11 points and eight rebounds.

Tom Izzo said of the game, “Strange game. We played five freshman and thought we might red shirt three of them. Disappointed in the first half with turnovers. Rebounded OK, but not as good as I thought we should. Cassius had some tendinitis, nothing that will linger.”

Husker head coach Tim Miles said of the game, “I thought we did a lot of thing right tonight. There are no moral victories. When they shoot the ball the well, that is why they might end up the conference champion.”

The Spartans shot 53% from the field including 50% from the three. The Spartans shot a stellar 88% from the free throw line. The Spartans had 22 assists on 32 baskets.

Izzo said of Goins, “Kenny did a good job tonight. He took some good shots. When he took good shots he made 90%. I think he thought he was Cassius there for a few moments. But Kenny was pretty solid the whole game.”

The Spartans won the battle of the boards 41-32. The Spartans had an acceptable 10 turnovers.

Miles added of Kenny Goins, “Mistake I made was that I came out early and talkd to Coach Izzo and told hi how impressed I am with Kenny Goins. Then he goes out and makes his first five. Self-made guy. Years ago not on the scouting report and then this. Says a lot about the character of Michigan State and Kenny.”

Izzo played 13 players including all of his five freshmen.

Spartan Nation has been reporting since early last week that Ward will return to play against Michigan. That is of course baring any setbacks. He was fitted earlier today for something to wear to help protect his injury.

The Spartans return to Big Ten action against Michigan this Saturday at 8 PM right back here at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. That game can be seen on ESPN.
