Following Michigan State’s conference title-clinching win over rival Michigan on Saturday, the Spartans received even more good news when Dallas (TX) Jesuit 2019 3-star power forward Julius Marble gave his commitment to Michigan State.
Marble, who was in attendance for Saturday’s win over the Wolverines, told Spartan Nation that the game-day atmosphere and the performance from the Spartans was something that helped put Michigan State over the top for him.
“It was just a great atmosphere watching the game,” he said. “It was wild seeing all of those people go crazy and see the players play. It was just great.”
A late riser on the recruiting scene, Marble passed up offers from Illinois, Oklahoma State, Florida International, Louisiana Tech, Murray State, TCU, St. Louis and UTSA to pick the Spartans.
When it came down to why he ultimately chose Michigan State, Marble said that those in and around the Spartan program showed a willingness to build a relationship that few other schools were willing to and added that when he visited East Lansing, he knew that was where he wanted to be.
“They just wanted to build a relationship more than the other schools – I can’t say that Oklahoma State tried to, they were a great group of guys, a great coaching staff, they always checked up on me, and I respect them for that,” he said. “Michigan State did as well, and I went on a visit, and I knew in my heart that this is the place for me. No disrespect to the other guys, but it’s just where I need to be. What’s best for me.”
Marble added that during his time on campus and in his conversations with those within the Michigan State program, he felt welcomed by the Spartans and added that he appreciated some of the honest conversations that he had with Izzo and made him want to choose Michigan State even more.
“Just a group of guys who just wanted to get to know me and make me feel apart of the team,” he said. “Coach, when he was talking with me was very upfront and very honest with me and told me what I can do and what I can bring to the table. That honesty and that bluntness was a great addition in me wanting to come here. As far as my recruitment, that was a big deal to me, wanting to make sure I was going somewhere I could feel comfortable and that they want me and I can feel like I could have a great relationship with them.”
Marble’s commitment now gives the Spartans three commits or signees in their 2019 class as he joins 4-star forward Malik Hall and 4-star guard Mark “Rocket” Watts.
Marble is considered as an all-around power forward, one who is capable of scoring both inside and out, handling the ball, rebounding and defending several different positions and it’s that versatility that makes Marble a good fit with the Spartans.
When talking with Izzo, Marble said that he’s spoken with Izzo regarding how the Spartans will use him and was told that he could play a role similar to the one that senior Kenny Goins has played this year and similar to former standouts Draymond Green and Adreian Payne as someone capable of playing in the post and knocking down outside shots and guarding different positions defensively.
“I was talking to the coach, and he said I could take the 4-spot that Kenny is playing and I can do what he does with shooting the 3’s and guards multiple positions,” he said. “I remind him of Draymond a little bit in that I can push the ball a little bit even though I’m not as good of a passer as he is, I can push the break a little bit and find the open guy and I remind him of Adreian Payne a little bit because I can crash hard on the rebound and hit the trail 3 and play good defense as well.”
