Russell Byrd is a tough player from Fort Wayne, Indiana and one of the stars of Tom Izzo’s 2010 recruiting class.

He broke his foot as first reported by Spartan Nation. He had surgery today and according to his father Kelly it went “Great!” Mr. Byrd went on to say, “Cast for a week and then a boot and rehab. Done in eight weeks. T Mac’s (MSU basketball trainer Tom Mackowiak) been awesome-rehab routine is already in place! Reports to campus first of July.”

Byrd had one screw put in his pinky toe on his left foot. With a full recovery expected,  Byrd will have a good chance to compete for considerable playing time with his improved defense and deadly outside shooting.
