Strengths: Danny’s biggest strength is his heart and commitment to the game. Against Penn State last year he slipped on the frozen ground (no fault of his own) and gave up a 49-yard pass play. The miracle was that it wasn’t a TD. The WR that was able to get by him with the slip was not the story. The WR was much faster and Danny slipped. The story was the heart of Fortener. Somehow, on bad turf, Fortener caught the much faster receiver to stop the TD. That one play (and there are many) is the quintessential Danny Fortener play. He plays the game all out, and with the passion that the greatest game should be played. He caught a MUCH faster receiver in bad conditions and it was all heart.

Weakness: Against Northwestern last year, Danny took the wrong angle at Tyrell Sutton and gave up a 66-yard play. That one play is a great example of his biggest weakness. Sometimes he plays off of guys, or over compensates and takes a wrong angle. It isn’t often, but it does happen. So what is the weakness? Sometimes Fortener over compensates because I don’t think he realizes how good he is. He has had to fight and claw for everything in his football career. I wish that he realized sometimes how good he really is. He is going to have a monster season for the Spartans this season and I noticed watching him in the spring and talking to him that he is growing into his role. He is no longer the inspirational guy; he is a leader and looked at with the utmost respect from coaches and teammates.

Final Analysis: The Spartan Nation needs to see Danny step up this season and be the QB of the secondary. Danny is a smart football player that understands the game. His vantage in the defensive backfield allows him to see the game develop and this season he needs to go from just a good football player to a vocal leader. I have no doubt that he will. His coaches trust him and Danny can be counted on. The Spartan DBs will be attacked this season with a monster front seven, and Fortener will be called upon to lead that group.
