Firing John L. Smith mid-season and rooting against MSU is a foolish proposition

First of all I am sure that those at MSU who read this will automatically see the headline and assume: “fat f******* Hondo calling for John L. Smith to get fired.” Well hopefully they have read on and will hear what I am saying.

Â
I am NEVER an advocate of firing a coach unless:

  1. Immoral action:Â cheating, drunk driving etc.
  2. Program out of control legally:Â drugs or multiple off field issues that involve the law.

Â
That being said NONE of that is going on at MSU. I have been around MSU my entire life and this is the best group of young men ever. Secondly, this season is far from over and John L. Smith still can (and I hope does) get to the 8 wins that both I believe and many high ranking people close to MSU feel he needs to get to.

Â
I cannot imagine people who are emailing me in droves (more then ever, hundreds of you) and saying that they hope MSU loses to get rid of JLS or that want him gone now.

Â
I for one (contrary to what some people at MSU think) like JLS and I hope he does get to 8 wins and stays. I even like his staff although I think that SOME of them may not be good coaches I think they are good guys. I don’t apologize for being critical, they are making huge jack and they need to grow some tough skin and accept that as one of the drawbacks of coaching in the Big Ten.

Â
Let’s be frank, if MSU beats UM and wins 8 games the Illini loss although painful is forgivable. I don’t blame anyone for being disgusted, angry, mad or any other adjective that implies nothing short of disgust, but to ask to pull the plug now, or root against MSU is absurd.

Â
Many of you are writing asking me whom I want as the next coach and my answer is JLS. He needs a win this Saturday no doubt, but the season is not done and we need to let that play out. If the season doesn’t get to eight wins then when we lose number 5 we can start that talk. I for one am rooting on the green and white and looking for a W this weekend. To be honest, I am rooting for JLS and hope that he gets to eight wins.

Â
At the end of the day the good character and graduating kids excuse doesn’t fly. He is supposed to do that; the issue is he has to win. If we only care about character and grades, we can join the Ivy League. The issue is that he is supposed to do that. The fact that it wasn’t done before him does not make his good job of doing it any more special. If this were a popularity contest he would win with me, I really like him. The fact is that it is only about one thing: just win baby and we have the rest of the season to hopefully see that.
