Saginaw High 90 Detroit Pershing 71

The tip was won by Saginaw who hit a three pointer to start the scoring. Then Mike Green hit a three pointer to put them up by six before a minute had run off the clock. The first minute and a half was all three point bombs from both teams. Saginaw kept shooting threes past the five minute mark and only drove the ball once. Both teams look exceptionally fast. Detroit looked very good at breaking Saginaw’s press. Saginaw and Detroit both played aggressively through the first six minutes. Freshman Tommy McClune had a nice tip in just before the first quarter expired to push the lead to ten, 22-12. Draymond Green had eight rebounds in the first quarter while Derrick Nix had six.

When the second quarter got underway, there wasn’t a whole lot of action. Both teams started playing tough defense and not allowing much in terms of offense. At the six minute mark, the Trojans made a three pointer and the Doughboys allowed a steal to become another two points. Nix went for a dunk after a broken press and was rejected by the rim. Through a quarter and a half, the Trojans were putting on a three point shooting clinic, not making all of them, but enough to be up 40-17. Pershing started to wake up at that point and scores 12 in the next three minutes. The score at halftime is 51-33. Leading scorers were Mike Green for Saginaw High and Demetrius Ward for Detroit Pershing.

Detroit got the ball to start the second half and immediately drain a three. Then Draymond and Courtney Washington each scored. The first few minutes were dominated by D. Green. The Doughboys did score nine points through the first 3:15 of the third quarter to Saginaw’s six. M Green continued his three point love affair and had 22 points through the half way point of the third quarter. There were not nearly as many fouls in the Class A game as we saw in the C and D games earlier today. Through three quarters, Saginaw was up 71-57 with each team scoring at least 20 and the team record for three pointers made was tied with 11 and still a quarter left to play.

Washington picked up his fourth foul early in the fourth and had to take a seat. No one scored though a minute and a half of the last quarter until D Green hits both his free throws at 6:12. M Green continued to have a fantastic day with another steal and another bucket. Both teams tightened up their defense and not many points were scored through half of the fourth quarter. D Green picked up his fourth foul with 3:34 left to play and it put Pershing into the bonus. At 3:02 remaining, Daniel West hit a three point shot, the 12th team three pointer of the game, to break the record for three point shots made by a team. With time running out and down by 15, Detroit Pershing utilizes their full court press, which Saginaw isn’t nearly as good at breaking as Detroit. A frustrated Detroit Pershing team picks up a silly technical foul with under a minute to play. At that point, Saginaw takes out all the starters and makes sure other guys get to play. A second technical was assed on Lugene Davis and West shoots another two, before the ball was even put back into play. One more shot was made by Saginaw and the final score was 90-71.
