Spartan Softball Tops Central Michigan and Wright State to Open Hoosier Classica

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Michigan State softball team (16-10) increased its win streak to five straight with a pair of wins over Central Michigan and Wright State on Saturday, March 19 to open the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind. The Spartans opened the afternoon with a 3-0 over the Chippewas before dispatching the Raiders, 6-3. Junior Lauren Kramer led the Spartans at the plate as well as within the circle on the day.

 

Kramer blasted in the game winning run during the first game against CMU when she blasted a solo homer to left-center field in the bottom of the second to lead 1-0.

 

An insurance run was recorded in the fourth when junior Lori Padilla singled up the middle to drive home classmate Ali Grant from second base.

 

Sophomore Jayme O’Bryant knocked in the final run in the game in the sixth when she hit a lead-off homer down the left-field line, making the score 3-0.

 

Freshman Cassee Layne evened her record to 6-6 with the win over CMU today. Layne tossed her fifth complete-game shutout of the season, allowing only two Chippewa hits. Layne struck out five batters faced and only allowed three walks.

 

Kari Seddon of Central Michigan fell to 4-4 on the season as she allowed two earned runs in the loss. Seddon recorded four strikeouts against four MSU hits.

 

The Spartans continued their success into the second game of the day against Wright State with a two run second inning. Junior Brett Williams homered to drive in Kramer with her hit to left center to take the early 2-0 lead.

 

Senior Lindsey Hansen knocked in the game winning runs with a single up the middle to score sophomore Kylene Hopkins and Padilla in the third inning.

 

The fourth MSU run was tallied in the fourth inning when O’Bryant recorded an unearned run as Padilla reached base on a fielding error at second.

 

WSU attempted to rally in the bottom of the fifth with a three run inning, pulling within one at 4-3. China Frost cleared the bases with a double down the right field line. Frost’s hit scored Louie Haney, Michelle Baker and Chelsea Archer.

 

Grant drove in the final Spartan run of the game in the seventh with a single to left to drive home Hansen.

 

Kramer moved to 7-3 on the season with the win over the Raiders. In 5.0 innings of work, Kramer allowed three earned runs on six hits. Kramer also struck out three batters faced while only walking one batter. Sophomore Shelby Wise threw 2.0 innings to earn her second save of the season. Wise allowed two hits and recorded one strikeout.

 

Krystian DeWitt falls to 7-6 this year in her 7.0 innings loss. DeWitt allowed six runs, five unearned, on eight hits. DeWitt also recorded five strikeouts and allowed six walks.

 

The Spartans close out tournament action with their second day of action at the Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana. MSU will play with its first game against Eastern Michigan at 10 a.m., followed by 12:15 p.m. contest against Loyola.
