Spartan Women look great in Green White game!

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Seniors Rene Haynes (Columbus, Ohio/Wellington School) and Victoria Lucas-Perry (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic) provided the spark for the White Team in the Michigan State women’s basketball team’s annual Green-White Scrimmage, combining for 48 points, 31 in the first half, to down the Green Team, 82-49, in the four-quarter exhibition at the Breslin Center on Wednesday night. 

        

With head coach Joanne P. McCallie combining lineups to have several players playing on both teams, Haynes led all players with 29 points and nine assists after playing three quarters with the White before finishing the night by scoring five points and adding an assist with the Green squad. 

        

The teams felt each other out in the opening minutes with the Green squad opening up a 9-5 lead after a 3-pointer from freshman Takeya Fortner (Flint, Mich./Northern) with 7:45 left in the opening quarter. After that, the White squad exploded with a 24-4 run to end the quarter, as Haynes contributed seven points and an assist during the run. 

        

Haynes finished the first half with 19 points, having posted three 3-pointers and six assists in the opening periods. Lucas-Perry finished the half with 12 points and two treys to help the White to a 42-27 halftime lead. The White was led by Fortner in the half, who had 10 points and sophomore Aisha Jefferson (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne), who had seven points and two rebounds, in her first action after coming back from shoulder and knee surgery in the offseason. 

        

The White opened up the floodgates again in the second half, after freshman Mandy Piechowski (Utica, Mich./Shelby Township) opened up the half with a three for the Green team, going on a 21-7 run to close the third quarter. Lucas-Perry headed up the effort with seven consecutive points during the stretch. The White kept the momentum going, closing out the game with a 19-10 advantage in the fourth quarter. 

        

Piechowski finished with 11 points, three rebounds and two assists while playing point guard for the Green squad for much of the game. She also added three 3-pointers. Fortner posted 10 points, four rebounds and two assists in her first action of the season. 

        

Freshman Allyssa DeHaan (Grandville, Mich./Grandville), after not tallying a point in the first half, poured it on the second half, leading all scorers with 14 points and eight rebounds. She also blocked three shots in the final 20 minutes. In all, she had 12 rebounds and four blocks in her debut. 

        

Sophomore Lauren Aitch (Lansing, Mich./Waverly) put in 13 points in the game, while playing for both teams, also grabbing six rebounds. Sophomore Mia Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Saint Louis University) scored eight points and added eight assists and three rebounds while seeing action on both sides of the floor. 

        

Senior Katrina Grantham (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) posted six points and five rebounds and senior Myisha Bannister (Cleveland, Ohio/Villa ANgela-St. Joseph) grabbed eight rebounds. 

                

The Spartans open up their exhibition season at the Breslin Center on Thursday, Nov. 2 with a 7 p.m. test against 2006 NCAA Division II National Champion Grand Valley State.
