2011 Spartan Nation Football Profile: #49 MLB TyQuan Hammock

Expectation:Â Backup MLB

Height:  6’

Weight:Â 230#

2011 Eligibility:Â Sophomore

EXP:Â 1 Letter

Status:Â Backup MLB/Special Team stud

Strengths: Hammock plays angry and ferocious. Let’s look at last season’s FAU game to best illustrate that. In the first quarter there was 11:56 on the clock and the Spartans were kicking off. Hammock flew down the field and blew up the wedge making a ferocious tackle. It was an amazing display of athleticism and the brute force trauma and force you look for and crave from the game of football.

Weakness: The game of football, when you are such a physical star like Hammock, also has a mental component. Against WMU in the first quarter with seven seconds on the clock once again Hammock found himself on the kickoff. Setting up the wall on a return he made a mental error, missed his man, and he made a tackle. At this BCS level there are always guys that you go against on scholarship who have talent. Brute force doesn’t work when you have a breakdown mentally. Hammock doesn’t have any physical weakness; those rest in staying focused on the game mentally.

Final Analysis: Hammock is too good to not be on the field. He is a victim of depth. He can play at this level, but behind Bullough he won’t get that spot. He is a very good player and a true talent.

I would not be shocked to see him move to DE simply so that they can get their best players on the field. I also look forward to seeing him share the middle with Bullough when the Spartans work their defense out of the Viper formation (3-4) against certain offenses.
