Grant Earns CCHA Rookie of the Week Honors

Freshman forward nets four-point weekend

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State freshman forward Derek Grant (Abbotsford, British Columbia) has earned Rookie of the Week honors for the first week of the playing season, as announced by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) on Monday.

Grant had a goal and an assist in each game in a sweep this past weekend of Clarkson University (6-1, 4-3). Grant netted three of his four points on the power play, contributing to MSU’s 5-of-16 effort (.312) on the man advantage. Grant skates on the Spartans’ top line with senior Nick Sucharski (Toronto, Ontario) and junior Corey Tropp (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.), and the trio accounted for nine points in the series sweep of the Golden Knights.

Grant currently shares the national and conference lead in freshman scoring with classmate Zach Josepher (Wantagh, NY), each averaging 2.0 points per game. Grant is also currently tied for the CCHA lead in points per game, goals (2), and power play points (3).

Michigan State, now 2-0, will travel this weekend to take on the University of Maine. Gametime each evening is at 7 p.m.
