B1G Football Preview: Minnesota Golden Gophers B1G West

Publish date:

Team: Minnesota Golden Gophers B1G West

Head Coach: Jerry Kill 4th Year

Last Year’s Record: 8-5

Key Assistant: DC Tracy Claeys

Trending: Treading water. The Gophers will struggle to match last year’s eight wins and I think if they do it, the eighth win will come in the bowl game. I like this team, but they got several fortunate breaks last year while playing on an emotional high. I do like the experience on this team, Let’s all hope Coach Kill can stay healthy, but the emotions of his sickness when he misses time can cause a team of 105 young people to respond in ways you can’t plan. Last year they rallied. I hope this year it is only about the team and Coach Kill remains in great health. He is a terrific coach and person.

Prediction: 7-5 (4-4) 5th place in the B1G West

Eastern Illinois: Win

Middle Tennessee: Win

At TCU: Loss

San Jose State: Win

At Michigan: Loss

Northwestern: Win

Purdue: Win

At Illinois: Win

Iowa: Win

Ohio State: Loss

At Nebraska: Loss

At Wisconsin: Loss

Final thoughts: Coach Kill is a solid fit at Minnesota. He can coach and develop players which any coach who succeeds there must do. If the focus is all football and not off the field issues they could surprise with so many young, but experienced players. The Gophers will be worth the price of admission this year. I say they are treading water because I don’t think they make the step to double digit wins this season, but I like this program a lot.
