With a rape scandal hanging over the Duke men's lacrosse team one of college basketball's pre-eminent programs has just taken a hit as well.
Last night police arrested ex-Duke guard J.J. Redick for driving while impaired (DWI) who was later released on $1,000 bond.
Redick was arrested at 1:03 a.m. early Tuesday morning in Durham, North Carolina after he made an illegal U-turn to avoid a police checkpoint.
Although Redick is no longer part of the Duke basketball team he has been the face of Duke athletics for the last four years and lived up to a standard that Grant Hill set in the early 90's. However with this recent and unexpected charge the Duke fan base can only cringe as they now have to deal with this as well as the on going investigation of the Duke men's lacrosse team.
The former Duke guard is a projected first round pick in the up coming NBA draft and had nothing but bright things in his future.
Throughout his career at Duke he was one of the games most recognizable faces and demonstrated what players could accomplish by staying in school for four seasons. Although Redick never captured a national championship he received numerous individual honors including the 2006 Wooden Award, which is given to the nations most outstanding player.
J.J. Redick represented everything that was good about college basketball. Redick played in an era that saw more high schooler's turn pro then at any other period of time, but Redick stayed in school and compiled a career that most college players would dream of.
While the number one pick in the NBA draft is still uncertain, one thing is and that is all eyes will be on J.J. Redick and how he is able to recover from a decision that resulted in a mistake that will hover over him for the remainder of his career.
