Prep Basketball Update - Feb 16 - Feb 23

 

Can you feel the excitement building? The district action begins a week from Monday. That means one more regular column then we will be in the big time for boy’s basketball. I found this week to be quite interesting when I was looking at the scores. Many of the games were very tight and even the blowout wasn’t as bad as it has been in past weeks. It doesn’t get more exciting than this; close games to end the season will show the boys how to play and win important games when the pressure is on. Now let’s take a look.

Low Score of the Week Part 1

Newaygo 36 Fruitport 31 (67 points)

It was a close game, but the Trojans of Fruitport never were able to take a lead. They trailed the whole game. Newaygo nailed seven of their 13 foul shots in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. Connor Bradley led the way with 17 points. Mike Reyes scored 12 in the losing effort.

Low Score of the Week Part 2

Springport 37 Union City 30 (67 points)

With a 17-12 halftime lead, Springport “uglied it up” according to their coach Brandon Baum, and took home the win. His team won their first conference game of the season (Big Eight). Ace Russell scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Collin Hawes scored seven. In the losing effort, Adam AcMoody scored 11.

Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week

Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy 86 Dearborn Heights Star International 32 (54 points)

Robert Andrews scored 28 points to lead all scorers. Teammate Derrick Walton Jr. scored 25, tossed 10 assists, and stole six balls in the winning effort. Ali Bazzi scored 14 for Star International.

High Score of the Week

Wyoming Park 83 Zeeland West 79 (162 points)

If a kid comes up to me and wants to know the most important part of basketball, I’ll always say the same thing; go shoot some free throws. Down the stretch, they were very important in Wyoming Park’s win. Jesse Love scored 26 points, including eight straight free throws in the final 90 seconds to make sure his team won. Casey Mott scored 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. For Zeeland West, Isaac Hernandez scored 24 points and Jordan Van Dort had 18 points and eight rebounds.

Future Spartan Update Taiwan Jones – New Baltimore Anchor Bay (Football Recruit)

Even though Jones is going to put on the green and white for the Spartans, he won’t be playing basketball. He will be donning the shoulder pads and helmets. That being said, he still is playing basketball during his senior year. Just last night, he scored 19 points which led his team to a 67-62 win over Madison. The win gave the Tars the outright boy’s basketball title in the Macomb Area Conference Blue Division. This was New Baltimore Anchor Bay’s first boy’s basketball championship. Earlier this season, he scored 41 points in a win over Port Huron. Since Christmas, he has averaged a double double. It was a pretty good senior campaign for Jones; he helped his team win their first league title since 2002 in football and won the first basketball title. We are all looking forward to this young man playing for our beloved Spartans.
