B1G Football Preview: Illinois Fighting Illini B1G West

Publish date:

Team: Illinois Fighting Illini B1G West

Head Coach: Tim Beckman

Last Year’s Record: 4-8

Key Assistant: OC Bill Cubit

Trending: Slightly Up. Cubit is a terrific coach who should be leading his own program. That is another story for another day, but I say slightly upward because of Cubit. The defense is abysmal. It can’t do anything worse and with another year under the steady hand of Cubit I do think the Illini are on the way up. I think they will make the magical six win mark this season and get to a bowl. I like Beckman, I just want to see more from him before I give my stamp of approval. DC Tim Banks is a good guy and is making over the defensive talent. His head coach is a former DC as well and there is no excuse for the defense not to take a step up this year. I think it will.

Prediction: 6-6 (3-5) 6th Place B1G West

WKU: Win

At Washington: Loss

Texas State: Win

At Nebraska: Loss

Purdue: Win

At Wisconsin: Loss

Minnesota: Loss

At Ohio State: Loss

Penn State: Win

At northwestern: Loss

Final thoughts: I know lots of people who work at Illinois that are truly terrific people and work hard. The issues at Illinois are in the upper reaches of leadership. Illinois is a gold mine of opportunity if they could get their act together and work together. Similar to what MSU used to be like, the politics of Illinois are their worst enemy. There is NO excuse for them to have a less than a successful football program. If they could all get on the same page they could.
