PALOS VERDES, Calif. â€“ The Michigan State womenâ€™s golf team wrapped up action at the Regional Challenge Wednesday at the Palos Verdes Country Club with a third-round score of 315. The Spartans finished in ninth place at the elite 15-team tournament with a 914 (302-297-315). All 15 teams in the field were ranked in the Golfweek Top 50, including 10 in the Top 25.
A day after tying the school single-round record with a 68, junior Caroline Powers carded a 78 in the third round to tie for 10th place on the individual leaderboard, marking her 13th career top-10 finish. Powers closed at 8-over with a 221 (75-68-78).
Liz Nagel shot the best round of the day for the Spartans with a 6-over 77. Nagel totaled a 238 (81-80-77) for the tournament.
Christine Meier finished in a tie for 35th place with a 15-over 228 (76-71-81). Meier tallied her best round of the season on Tuesday with a 71, but finished the third round with an 81.
Allyssa Ferrell tied for 52nd at 235 (78-78-79), while Lindsey Solberg tied for 55th with a 237 (73-81-83).
Top-ranked UCLA won the tournament with an 18-over 870, followed by No. 4 USC (882) and No. 34 Pepperdine (887).
Michigan State returns to action Feb. 20-21 (Monday-Tuesday) as it hosts the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla.
