Men’s Golf Shares Georgetown Intercollegiate Title

Moseley and Mory both post top-10 individual finishes.

 

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men’s golf team accomplished its goal going into the week, wrap-up the fall season on a high note. The Spartans did that, finishing as co-champions of the Georgetown Intercollegiate on Tuesday. MSU shot a final round 5-over par 289 at The Members Club at Four Streams in Beallsville , Md. , to come from behind for its first tournament victory under first-year head coach Casey Lubahn.

 

“I am very proud of our team, of all our guys, as this is a program win,” said Lubahn. “We fought hard all day to make it into the playoff, but unfortunately it couldn’t be finished because of travel issues. We can now carry the momentum into the winter training.

 

Like the past two days, our top-four guys have played really well week-in, week-out. We have received production from the guys in the fifth spot, but need more consistency from there in the spring. However, I am proud to celebrate our first victory together as a program.”

 

After ending the 54-hole tournament tied at 26-over par 878, Michigan State and West Florida proceeded to begin a playoff. However after finishing the first hole tied, the playoff was cut short due to the teams needing to catch their flights. The host Georgetown was third, a shot behind at 27-over 879.

 

Two Spartans placed in the top-10 this week, and four finished among the top-20. Junior Matthew Moseley had his best showing of the season, tying for fifth with a 4-over par 217 (70-75-72). It was his third top-5 in his career. Moseley was second on the team with nine birdies over the two days.

 

Senior Chris Mory had his third top-10 finish in five fall events. Mory carded a team-low 1-under 70 today to shoot a 5-over par 218 (74-74-70) and tie for seventh for the week. Mory led MSU with 10 birdies, good for third in the field. He also led the tournament in par-5 scoring, shooting 6-under, while ranking second in par-3 scoring at even par.

 

Senior Dan Ellis concluded his impressive fall season, tying for 13th at 9-over 222 (77-72-73). Ellis finished in the top-15 in all five events this fall, after having only one in his first three seasons in green and white.Â

 

Freshman McCormick Clouser rounded out the top-20 finishers for MSU, tying for 19th at 11-over 224 (75-72-77). Clouser has had a solid start to his collegiate career, posting four top-25 finishes this fall. Junior Will Morris improved his play every round this week, ending up in a tie for 33rd at 16-over 229 (79-76-74). Sophomore Carson Castellani played this week as an individual, tying for 48th with a 23-over 236 (79-80-77).

 

For the tournament, Michigan State was second in the field with 33 birdies. The Spartans led all competitors on the par-4s (34-over) and par-5s (9-under).

 

Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume ran away with the individual crown, shooting a 7-under par 206, to win by nine strokes.

 

The Spartans ended the first fall under Lubahn with four top-5 finishes in the five events. Individually, MSU had 10 top-10 showings.

 

After taking the winter off from competition, the Spartans return to action on Feb. 10-11 for the Big Ten Match Play Championship.
