Athlon Sports Releases 2024 Opponent Projections For Mississippi State Football

Athlon Sports' Steven Lassan recently released his opponent projections for Mississippi State football's 2024 schedule.

The 2024 college football season simply won't be like the others over recent history for the Mississippi State Bulldogs, or any other team in Southeastern Conference for that matter.

That season, the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns will join the conference, and one of the most hotly debated topics as of late has been whether to opt for an eight-game schedule or a nine-game slate of in-conference contests.

Though there's been some controversy over it, the SEC ultimately decided to stick to eight games, though it wouldn't exactly be surprising to see that change at some point in the future.

Steven Lassan of Athlon Sports recently released his projections on just who MSU's eight SEC opponents could be for the 2024 season, predicting a lineup that would include Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss, Texas, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt.

"The Bulldogs catch five of their traditional SEC West foes (missing LSU) and could play arguably the weakest team in the conference (Vanderbilt) next fall," he wrote. "Zach Arnett's program would also play Florida for the first time since '18."

How this ultimately all plays out will be something to watch, especially with questions surrounding just where Texas and Oklahoma will fall in the standings after their initial season in the conference.

Barring any complete surprises, 2024 will also mark Zach Arnett's second season as the MSU head coach as he'll be hoping to build on a positive first run at it after the Bulldogs finished 9-4 in Mike Leach's last season in 2022.
