BREAKING: Hunter Johnson Named Northwestern's Starting Quarterback

The fifth-year transfer has proven to his coach that he’s the best option to lead the offense this Fall.

After a grueling camp and weeks of competition against fellow QBs Ryan Hilinski and Andrew Marty, Hunter Johnson has been named the starting quarterback of the Northwestern Wildcats.

For Johnson, now a senior who has been with the program since transferring back in 2018, he has earned the opportunity to have a bounce back year after a disappointing junior campaign. A large part of his rapid improvement stems from his increased familiarity with the program and his dedication to studying film. “Coach Jake is great. Last year with COVID and everything getting shut down for a little bit we really were able to hammer down on some of the meeting times,” Johnson said during last week's media availability. “So that was a big, big, big time for me to kind of sink in and try to learn and yeah I'm definitely feeling more confident this year.“

Statistically, Johnson had his best season back in 2019 when he played in six games and threw for 432 yards and a touchdown. He also finished the year with 64 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.

Johnson’s first start of the season will be on Friday, Sep. 3 against Michigan State University.
