Who's That Wildcat: OL Josh Thompson

Get to know the monster offensive lineman from Michigan and what he'll bring to the trenches.

Evaluation: It is easy to spot Josh Thompson when turning on the game tape. The mammoth offensive lineman from Michigan stands at six feet and five inches, weighing 310 pounds. Thompson is an absolute mauler who punishes anyone who stands in his way. His physicality really jumps off the tape, whether that be at guard or at tackle, it is clear that Thompson brings a sort of nastiness to his game. Thompson allowed zero sacks in his three seasons on varsity, while playing left tackle, right guard and right tackle. Once he gets his hands on you, it is virtually game over. Thompson is too powerful and too strong at the point of attack to wrestle with. A defensive lineman's best bet is to use speed and elusiveness in getting around Thompson.

However, that is easier said than done. Don't let Thompson's size and physicality fool you into thinking he is some stiff who can't move well, as that is simply not the case. Thompson has quick and nimble feet which help him get out of his stance quicker and really benefits him, especially in the run game when he is pulling. Thompson has the ability to burst out of the gates and has the athleticism to get out in front and be the lead blocker on perimeter plays. Thompson is a well rounded offensive lineman whose tools will translate very well in the Big Ten.

Projected Playing Time: While Thompson definitely has the size and talent to make some noise early on, he will most likely redshirt this season. Northwestern's offensive line (and depth) are well positioned this year where they won't need to call on him. Thompson will be able to hone his craft this year and learn from the upper classmen, as he projects to play a pivotal role in the Wildcat's future.
