Notre Dame Adds Grad Transfer To Its Bullpen

Notre Dame added a left-handed grad transfer to its bullpen for the 2020-21 season

The Notre Dame baseball team has added another graduate transfer to its squad, adding Richmond reliever James Hurlbert

Hurlbert tossed 10.0 innings out of the pen this spring before the season was canceled. He struck out nine batters but walked 13, struggling with control and walking at least three batters in four of his five appearances. The redshirt sophomore also struck out at least two batters in four of his five appearances, and Hurlbert earned two saves in those five games.

In a matchup against No. 4 Georgia, Hulbert went 3.2 innings and gave up just one run while striking out two batters.

The Harrison, N.Y. native missed the 2019 season but was outstanding in 2018, tossing 18.1 innings in 10 appearances while posting a 1.96 ERA. He struck out nine batters and held opponents to a .155 batting average. Hurlbert did battle control issues that season as well, walking 12 batters and hitting another.

The 6-2, 220-pound left-hander is projected to have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Hurlbert is the second graduate transfer pitcher to transfer to Notre Dame this spring. Last month, the Fighting Irish and head coach Link Jarrett also added Furman left-handed starter John Michael Bertrand. Bertrand is also left-handed, but he's a starter and was in the midst of an outstanding 2020 campaign when the season was canceled.
