Irish Breakdown Mailbag

Bryan Driskell

I'm going to do another Mailbag this week. Depending on how many questions I get, I might do one in podcast form and the other in written form.

Fire away with all your questions about Notre Dame football, Notre Dame recruiting or college football at large.

I realize it's only been a few games against mediocre competition, but if the oline continues its excellent play throughout the season, particularly against top tier d's (Clemson, Pitt), who deserves the most credit for the turnaround?
Conversely, does it change your opinion as to who was to blame for for their play for the past few seasons? I'd say the play of the oline has been the aspect I've enjoyed the most about this years team. Their play doesn't have the feel of fools gold as we approach the meat of the schedule. Appreciate your thoughts as well as those other patrons if the site.

what do you think the solution is at linebacker, and do you think there is a problem? How do you see the receiver position playing out?

A multi-part question:

  1. What has been the biggest positive surprise you have seen from the team?
  2. What has been the biggest negative surprise you have seen from the team?
with two fill in the blanks:
  3. Other than something related to Clemson or W-L record, in order to be relevant with the Playoff Selection Committee, the Irish must do these two things.

Piggybacking off of acoluse a little bit, but who do you think takes the Buck spot by Clemson game week baring injury?
I must admit I loved Marist coming in but feel he may be too small. Is that it or is it conditioning/fine tuning his technique to shed the blocks because I still feel he can play, and his ceiling I feel is higher than a Kiser. Although I love the moxy and soundness that Kiser brought we have to go based off the fact it was inly against USF.

Coach to coach talk:
It is 4th and 7. ND is down 27-23 to Clemson with 4 seconds left. The Ball is at the 13 yard line. ND OL v. Clemson DL has been a good battle all game. You are Rees and have to call the play to win the game. What personnel do you want on the field and what is the play call that gives ND the win?

What would you do to get Foskey on the field more. Should he play over Hayes or would you move Ade to play some 3 Technique and all have all 3 on the field

I would not underestimate Kiser. He's young and a tremendous athlete and still growing and his instincts to the football are hard to teach. I hope the kid gets more playing time because he reminds me of another player I saw play in person over 20 times, Luke Kuechly. I would also bet that Kiser is actually quicker and faster over 20yds than Marist from observing their tape over the last few games.

With what you've seen so far, how do you think ND will finish this year? Do you see them in the playoffs or NYE bowl?

Also, more of a future-thinking question, how do you think the season might impact recruiting this cycle and 2022, particularly knowing next year may be a bit of a rebuilding year? Despite how Williams and Tyree are doing, it'd be great to see a Will Shipley type paired with them in the backfield and another Kyle Hamilton in the secondary.

Any insight on what is going on with Jack Lamb? I thought he played well last year on 3rd downs and also against USF. Remember the play where he blew up De’Andre Swift on a screen pass down in Athens last year? Pretty impressive. Simon and Marist look lost on the field to me so makes no sense why Lamb isn’t getting time.

What are your initial impressions of Clsrence Lewis? Thoughts on long term potential? It appears at first glance ND may have uncovered a diamond in the rough similar to a Julian Love...

Coming into this year I expected a big year from the wrs, not so much one player but the position group as a whole. So far it’s been a letdown, what do you see that’s been going wrong and when does it start to become a problem recruits notice, especially the lack of opportunities/targets for young players

It’s clear to anyone watching that the staring receiver group of McKinley, Skowronek and Davis do not give us a chance agaisnt Clemson.. and could make it tough for us to move the ball against Pitt or keep up with UNC... is there anything you’re hearing that gives you any hope of more talented players getting more playing time?

Is Notre Dames inability to get the ball downfield more on Book or on scheme? You have a better view of the field than those of us watching TV and I'm just curious about how often Book is missing, or not choosing to throw it more than 10 yards. Can't help but feel like Clemson will destroy us if we don't significantly improve the medium/deep pass game.
