PODCAST: David Abiara Commitment, OL Recruiting, Corner Recruiting And More

Bryan Driskell

The commitment of Mansfield (Texas) Legacy four-star defensive end David Abiara leads off the latest Irish Breakdown podcast. The analysis begins with some background on Abiara's commitment, why this commitment matters, how he fits at Notre Dame and then talks about what's next when it comes to defensive line recruiting.

Next the podcast dives into the loss of Deion Colzie and why that happened before talking about the offensive line recruiting situation. After losing Landon Tengwall, which came after losing Wyatt Milum, the Irish have to regroup and get back on track if the OL class is going to be as good as it should be.

The final topic of conversation in this podcast is cornerback recruiting. We analyze the job being done by new coach Mike Mickens, who was thrust into a tough situation. That is followed by analysis of what corners to keep an eye on and whether or not Mickens is capable of actually landing a cornerback class that gives the Irish a chance to field a dominant defense in years to come.

Make sure to stay locked into Irish Breakdown for all the latest and best coverage of Notre Dame football and Notre Dame's recruiting efforts.

Enjoyed the pod. I’m curious if Alexander wasn’t staying on top of Colzie daily then who was he contacting?

Also on Milum, I just don’t see him entertaining the idea of flipping. in WV all you have is WVU football. The in state pull and fandom is fanatical. Nester (HS teammates) was bashed for months for picking OSU then VT and he wasn’t even originally from WV. Milum saw that first hand daily, and still picked WVU. He’ll be a big fish in a small pond, but he picked wvu which means he was shopping down a completely different lane than ND..

2012 Stanford would be a game I’d like for you to add to the list to cover. Lots of build up, didn’t disappoint. I enjoyed that one...in a monsoon.

Looking forward to getting you and Vince back together and talking ball.

Come on. How is this still happening? Notre Dame as a program can not be out worked on the recruiting trail and expect to pull in a top five recruiting haul like BK talked about. You have to put in the work to catch up with the likes Ohio State and Clemson. If Brian Kelly has any true intentions of elevating this program into the top 5 nationally in recruiting your assistants have to be relentless.

Recruiting just hasn't been the same since Chip Long left. When it comes to the premier programs in the country those head coaches lead by example and are relentless in recruiting. Those elite head coaches enjoy the grind of recruiting. Kelly said he was going to change but clearly nothing has changed so far. Agree 100% with coach. WVU should never beat out the Irish. Especially when that player is a OL.

Coach how do you think Quinn has done recruiting since he has been at ND? Also I think you may have answered this too, do you think Tengwall could flip to ND later? Bringing this from Twitter.

@KMoore-24 IMO they played Milum all wrong. You even look at the graphics that ND itself produced the “Big 3” Milum wasn’t included. When you single kids out like that it’s a big risk. ND favored others and came into the game later than most with Milum. Kids from WV think that WVU is the only school in the country that matters. I grew up around it. It’s unbearable. You will be hard pressed to find 2 schools on completely opposite end of the academic spectrums than WVU, and ND. There’s a big reason WVU ended up in the Big 12 instead of the ACC.

I agree with you after watching Abiara's junior highlights. Looks long and can definately be built up bigger, needs to get faster for sure. If Ogundeji has made strides this kid DEFINATELY can.

Recruiting seems bleak right now, ND needs to get Shipley on board. "Savages wanna play with other savages." Maybe his commitment will fire up some momentum and maybe flip a couple to ND (especially 1 OL in particular). They need to get Spindler, that will help BIG TIME. DB offers flying put like crazy it seems, could use a good get there. Still plenty of time, you never know, Hamilton was a last minute grab it seemed and voila!

Top 5 recruiting class? Right now we are headed to top 15, like always. Without Long, Notre Dame recruiting=F. What a letdown after hearing Kelly said a top 5 class was possible. What a shame.

So is the staff pulling a colzie with styles ? Sounds like Harbaugh is putting in effort and flipping this kid. Once again Kelly not putting in effort and the staff becoming distant once a kid commits.
