2021 four-star, wide receiver, Walker Merrill visited Tennessee over the weekend. The top 300 prospect nationally liked what he saw from Tennessee in the outing, and he enjoyed the atmosphere. Merrill recaps the visit here with VR2.
Merrill, who holds over 15 offers, said of his current recruitment, “I have not focused too much on it. There have been a lot of schools that have reached out, including Tennessee. A lot of schools that have offered me are still in touch. A lot of SEC schools, like Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt. Plus, Duke and Penn State, but a lot of schools that have offered me are still in contact.”
Merrill added, “I would say all of the schools that have offered me are still in play.”
Almost half of Merrill’s offer list is from SEC schools, but is there an appeal for him to stay in the Southeastern Conference?
Merrill said, “that is not really a factor, and distance really is not a factor for me.”
Tennessee is taking advantage of having Merrill close to campus, and they got him back on Rocky Top for a visit this past weekend. Merrill said, “it was a great game. It was a cool environment, and the fans got crazy. It got really loud in there, and I was very impressed. That was definitely a great visit.”
Merrill is already building a relationship with Tee Martin. He said, “it is growing for sure. We have stayed in touch quite a bit. I think he is interested in how I play, but I think he is a great coach, no doubt.”
Merrill was also impressed with how the Volunteers receiving corps performed on Saturday. He added, “when you have two receivers with over 100 yards receiving and a touchdown apiece, it draws your eye to that because you can see that they get their receivers the ball. What is not to like about receivers getting the ball?”
While Merrill is not sure when he will start narrowing the process down, he said, “I think I will take some official visits before I make any type of call. I do not know about all that yet, timing-wise.” Keep in mind, official visits can be taken as early as April now for rising seniors.
Merrill said, in his own words, of what kind of player he is, “I am different on the field. I am aggressive. I would say, I would probably die on the field before I give up or anything. I like to risk everything out there.”
Merrill said of who he is off the field, “I am just kind of outgoing. I try to make everybody laugh. I would say I am different on the field than off because when I get on the field I am focused. Off the field, I would say I am a goofy personality.”
Merrill is currently working to lineup more visits, as he continues to work through this process.
Merrill is the number 252 overall prospect, number 38 WR, and the No. 5 prospect in Tennessee for the 2021 class, according to 247 Sports.
