The Texas Tech Red Raiders will seek a 2-0 start to the season when they host the Texas Southern Tigers at 7 p.m. CT Thursday at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock.

The Red Raiders (1-0) are seeking to close off an undefeated week and boost their ranking in the national polls. Texas Tech started the season No. 25 in the AP preseason poll, one of five Big 12 teams that made the preseason Top 25.

Texas Southern (0-1) is coming off a season-opening loss at San Francisco. But, the Tigers were one of the better teams in the SWAC last season and turned the Dons inside-out with their defense in the second half. But the Tigers couldn't muster a comeback from a 15-point halftime deficit.

The Red Raiders finished 27-10 overall last season and 18-0 in the friendly confines of United Supermarkets Arena. Adams has been working on limiting personal fouls in the offseason as Tech averaged 16.2 per game last year.

The Tigers finished 2021-2022 with a 13-5 record but just 8-10 on the road in road games. They'll be looking to improve on their 43.6 percent field goal percentage from a season ago.

Live updates will appear here after tipoff...

Starting Lineup

The Red Raiders announced the same starting five from their season opener on Monday.

The game was still set for a 7 p.m. tip-off on ESPN+/Big 12 Now. Texas Southern was without PJ Henry, who scored 21 points in the Tigers' opener against San Francisco on Monday.

Under-16 time out First Half

The Red Raiders started the game by grabbing a quick lead. Center Daniel Batcho left the game quickly after taking a foul in the first couple of minutes. That didn't deter the Red Raiders from going on a 7-1 run to start the game. De'Vion Harmon got off to a quick start for Texas Tech, scoring four of the Red Raiders' first 10 points. Kevin Obanor and Jaylon Tyson both subbed out early in the game with three points each. After a 3-pointer from Kerwin Walton, Texas Tech had a 13-1 lead with 15:42 left in the first half.

Under-12 time out

The Red Raiders kept the offense balanced, but Texas Southern worked its way back into the game after a slow start. Behind seven points from John Walker III, the Tigers cut the lead from 13-1 to 19-16. Harmon remained the Red Raiders' scoring leader with four points. But, four other Red Raiders had three points each with 11:46 left.

Under-8 time out

The Red Raiders came out and created a bit of cushion the Tigers led by Tyson, who pushed his ledger to six points as the Red Raiders pushed the lead to 25-19 with under 10 minutes left in the first half. D'Maurian Williams helped push the Red Raider lead to eight points with his second 3-pointer of the game. A Batcho tip-in gave the Red Raiders a 10-point lead, 30-20, with 7:54 left.

Under-4 time out

Texas Southern, once again, made some inroads into the Texas Tech lead. A 3-pointer by Isaiah Marin, but it was answered by a put-back dunk by the Red Raiders' KJ Allen. That was followed by a Tyson drive and basket as he drew a foul. Tyson made the free-thrown to push the Red Raiders lead back to double digits. Allen put together another strong play as he dribbled down into the point and scored while drawing a foul. Elijah Fisher's up-and-under basket for Texas Tech gave the Red Raiders a 39-26 lead with 3:58 left.

Halftime

Texas Tech had a 44-28 lead over Texas Southern at halftime. Tyson led the Red Raiders with nine points. Harmon added seven points. For Texas Southern, Walker led the way with seven points.

Under-16 time out, second half

The Red Raiders continued to extend their lead in the first four minutes of the second half, as they headed to the bench with a 50-33 lead. Tyson was closing in on double figures with nine points, while Harmon and Batcho each had seven points.

Under-12 time out

The Red Raiders remained in control, up 54-35. Naturally, defense is playing a role for Texas Tech. Through nearly 30 minutes the Red Raiders held the Tigers under 40 percent shooting from the floor and under 20 percent shooting from 3-point line. Ten different Red Raiders had points in the game.

Under-8 time out

Kevin Obanor became the first Red Raiders player to hit double figures in this stretch of the game, as he reached 13 points on a 3-pointer from the right wing. It was the ninth assist of the game for Texas Tech. By that point, the Red Raiders had the game firmly in hand, as the 3-pointer gave them a 61-38 lead. By the break, Texas Tech had a 65-40 lead. Tyson moved into double figures with 13 points.

Davon Barnes had eight points for Texas Southern.

Under-4 time out

Harmon moved into double figures during this part of the game, as he headed to the bench with 12 points as the Red Raiders went to younger players so they could get more playing time. Texas Tech had a 72-44 lead with less than four minutes remaining. Barnes was finally in double figures with 10 points for TSU, but the Tigers were still shooting well below 40 percent from the floor and below 20 percent from the arc.

End of game

The Red Raiders beat the Tigers, 78-54, to improve to 2-0 for the season. Obanor and Tyson had 13 points each, while Harmon had 12. Barnes had 10 points for TSU, while Zytarious Mortle added 12 points.
