After starting the year razor-thin at running back, Texas could soon gain another valuable weapon in its backfield with the potential return of freshman Jordan Whittington.

Whittington has played just one half of football so far this year, catching two passes against Louisiana Tech before re-aggravating a sports hernia injury from high school.

The injury required a surgery that left Wittington sidelined for four to six weeks, a window of time he is now entering.

"Best case scenario would be the week after West Virginia, " Herman said. "Worst-case would be a week or two after that. He hasn't had any setbacks."

The Longhorns experienced a series of fo injuries through fall camp with Kirk Johnson (shoulder), Daniel Young (ankle) and Darrien Brown (stroke) all sidelined for a significant amount of time.

As a result of those injuries, Roschon Johnson was called from quarterback to running back, servin admirably in his new role with 223 yards and two touchdowns from scrimmage.

Now the Longhorns seem to be coming out the other side from those injuries with Young already back and both Johnson and Whittington likely eyeing October returns.

Whittington should add an explosive element to the Texas offense. He drew rave reviews at running back after making the transition from receiver during the spring.

He was expected to be a big part of the Longhorns offense and serve as the team's No. 2 back behind Ingram before the injury.

With the Longhorns nearing full health at the position one can't help but wonder if Johnson will return to quarterback or continue to play at running back after a solid start at the new position.
