The 1995-96 Texas Tech team, the last to defeat Texas in Austin and the school’s first to reach the Sweet 16, got plenty of air time during the Longhorn Network broadcast on Saturday.

The current Red Raiders joined that famous group by ending 22 years of failure in the state capital.

Guard Matt Mooney scored 22 points to lead Texas Tech as it controlled the second half and defeated Texas, 68-62, on Saturday at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.

Brandone Francis hit a 3-pointer that put the Red Raiders ahead 61-51 with 3:38 left in the second half. At that point, the Red Raiders had outscored the Longhorns 35-21 in the second half as Texas Tech put itself in position for the road win.

The Red Raiders hit 7 of 8 free throws in the final minute to fend off Texas (10-6, 2-2 Big 12).

In doing so, Texas Tech (15-1, 4-0) achieved its best record through 16 games since that 1995-95 Red Raiders squad that got so much attention this week.
