USC Holds First Scrimmage At Coliseum

Scott Wolf

USC held a closed scrimmage today at the Coliseum but I hear it was more of a practice. That is sort of how scrimmages have been held under Clay Helton in recent years.

One player who stood out was tailback Stephen Carr, who is getting plenty of snaps with Markese Stepp being brought back slowly and Vavae Malepeai nursing a mild hamstring injury.

Sophomore defensive end Drake Jackson did not participate in the scrimmage as he continues to come back from a hamstring injury.

Sorry, but Carr sucks in regular games, so no info that is useful

This could be another huge loss for snake bit Helton. Markese is THE difference maker on 3rd & 5 or once we get inside the 10. We'd have a much harder time making firsts & much weaker goal line offense without him. He gives us that extra dimension that's been missing since Lendale White. After Slovis he's the biggest asset Helton has (or had) going for him on offense.

I'm hopeful Carr has a memorable Senior year. (So, technically, I must disagree.) It is also quite possible that he just never recovered from his spine surgery. He's just not the same guy we saw as a Frosh.

While I agree with others that having Stepps getting tons of reps this year was part of the plan, the ankle tendon surgery he had just does not sound like it "took." Very worried for him.

Vavae is a tough runner on 3rd and 2 and can get the job done. I cannot recall him ever fumbling also. He deserves loyalty from us.

Finally, don't know the plans for Christon, but his speed is enthralling. He can play this season without losing a year of eligibility. I think we should have a robust run game. Utah will be the first test.

Carr has performed the way Helton has had the entire team performing -- mediocre. Maybe with a more serious coaching group he can reach his true potential. I don't blame Carr. I blame Helton. This young man was a beast when he came to USC.

Agree.
I like Jinks and hope that he teaches these 4 talented RB's how to run the ball.
