Duke Blue Devils vs. Virginia Cavaliers Super Regional Predictions

The Duke Blue Devils and Virginia Cavaliers are two fairly evenly-matched clubs heading into this Super Regional matchup. After going 48-12 in the regular season, Virginia swept the Charlottesville Regional round, defeating Army 15-1 and besting East Carolina in back-to-back games. Similarly, Duke earned a Super Regional berth after going 38-22 in the regular season and defeating UNC-W, Rider and Coastal Carolina in the Conway Regional round.

The two ACC clubs have faced each other this year, in a three-game set that took place at the end of April – Duke won that series 2-1, featuring a Game 1 victory by a 17-5 margin and a 7-3 victory in Game 3. Each of the games were played in Charlottesville, potentially providing a glimpse into this Super Regional showdown.

While both teams boast solid lineups, Virginia clearly has the statistical edge. Their lineup boasts five starters who each hit at least .300, with four players hitting 10+ home runs. The lineup is anchored by Kyle Teel (.423/.487/.690, 13 HR, 64 RBI) and Jake Gelof (.330/.438/.735, 22 HR, 84 RBI), though they have players who can both hit for power and get on base throughout the lineup. They even have two players – Griff O’Ferrall and Ethan O’Donnell – who have stolen more than 15 bases.

While Virginia has one of the best lineups in the country, Duke isn’t bad at the plate either: four starters carry a batting average over .300 heading into the game and five players hit 10 or more home runs. Their three most important hitters are Jay Beshears (.332/.442/.587, 14 HR, 54 RBI), Alex Stone (.324/.390/.602, 17 HR, 62 RBI) and MJ Metz (.290/.412/.608, 17 HR, 48 RBI), though no player in the lineup holds an OPS below .800 heading into the series.

On the mound, Virginia holds a clear advantage. Each of their four starters boasts sub-4.00 ERAs, with likely Game 1 starter Connelly Early leading the pack. Through 75.1 IP, Early has posted an 11-2 record with a 3.35 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and a 90/20 K/BB ratio. Things won’t get much easier for the Blue Devils in Game 2, as the Cavaliers will likely roll out Brian Edgington, who holds an 8-3 record with a 3.64 ERA and an 81/20 K/BB ratio. If it goes to a Game 3, Virginia will likely go with Nick Parker, with his 8-0 record and 3.78 ERA.

For Duke, the pitching situation has been a bit of an issue. Alex Gow is their primary starting pitcher, starting in each of his 16 appearances – every other pitcher on the roster is a starter/reliever hybrid. For his part, Gow has been solid – he’s managed a 4.62 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and a 68/28 K/BB ratio; however, these numbers are a bit misleading. He should have a better final stat line, as evidenced by his exceptional .215 opponent batting average.

It is likely Gow gets the ball to kick off the series; however, where the Blue Devils go after that is a question. Andrew Healey made the second-most starts on the roster (10), posting an excellent 2.27 ERA and 1.11 WHIP across 39.2 innings, making him the most likely choice.

Still, Duke’s 2-1 series win in late April shows that they have the ability not just to hang with the Cavaliers, but beat them as well. Virginia has a clear edge in both the pitching and hitting departments, but Duke can manage a series victory if they get the most out of their pitching staff. With 13 arms throwing at least 20 innings, they have depth and experience that is almost unmatched by any other program. This gives Duke a fighting chance, if an unlikely one, to upset Virginia in the Super Regional.
