Husky Roster Review: Kam Fab Could Stand to Be More Fab

The veteran defensive back is ready as always to fill in.

Kamren Fabiculanan is extra polite. He refers to media members as sir. He often defers to his parents to explain himself. He doesn't stray from the respect thing when speaking about opposing teams or being in position competition.

While that is more than admirable, here's wondering if he doesn't need to set his hair on fire going forward and let loose with a couple of howls echoing through Husky Stadium just to let everyone know he's around.

As he enters his fifth football season at the University of Washington, the player affectionately as Kam Fab remains there if you need him, but not necessarily pushing and shoving his way into the starting lineup where that might be recommended.

Known as Kam Fab, he possesses one of the best nicknames on the team and he courageously wears No. 13, which a lot of players won't touch, but he seems content to let things come to him rather than demand more playing time.

As for that number, he said, "My birthday is March 13. I felt 13 was a special number."

Going down the roster from No. 0 to 99, Fabiculanan, who wears 13 all to himself, is next up in a series of profiles about each of the Huskies' scholarship players and assorted walk-ons, summing up their spring football performances and surmising what might come next for them.

Kam Fab has experienced it all as this multi-skilled Husky defensive back who's played safety, cornerback, safety again and now the hybrid Husky, which is the Montlake version of the nickelback.

"I take pride in knowing the whole defense," he said.

He was a starting safety in one of the Huskies' most infamous football games, their 13-7 season-opening loss to Montana in 2021 and then didn't open another game that season.

The 6-foot-1, 197-pound junior from Camarillo, California, didn't return to the starting lineup until last season's Michigan State game where he filled in for an injured Asa Turner and solidly came up with 8 tackles in the Huskies' 39-28 victory.

Thereafter, Fabiculanan posted a career-best 11 tackles in the 40-32 loss at UCLA and brought the UW's 24-21 win over Oregon State to an end at Husky Stadium with a fumble recovery.

Emerging from spring practice, Kam Fab was behind seniors Dominique Hampton and Turner at the safety positions and fellow junior Mishael Powell at the hybrid Husky. As it stands, he represents a spare tire or a Band-Aid or a safety valve..

"Wherever the coaches need me, I'll be ready for them," the versatile guy said.

However, with redshirt freshman Tristan Dunn rising through the ranks at both safety and husky Hybrid, and promising new safeties arriving in Diesel Gordon and Vincent Holmes, Fabiculanan might consider pressing the issue more and make the UW coaches get ready for him. Kam Fab needs to be fabulous.

KAM FABICULANAN FILE

Service: Kam Fab has appeared in 22 Husky games and started six of them, 13 and 5 in 2022, respectively. When safety Asa Turner got hurt last fall, he stepped in for four starts, and when Hampton at the hybrid Husky came up lame for a game, Fabiculanan subbed in for him, too.

Stats: He has 47 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 3 pass break-ups and a forced fumble in his UW career. Like a lot of his fellow Husky defensive backs, he doesn't have an interception.

Role: Fabiculanan got on the field in every game in 2022 and started nearly half of them when the Huskies were faced with situations of need. However, the DeBoer staff went out and recruited a lot of defensive backs this past winter to greatly bolster the secondary and he might have to do more than just be available if he wants to maintain or add minutes.
