UW signs 20 recruits, focuses on defensive linemen

As Washington coach, Chris Petersen has started the same quarterback for four years, found the school’s all-time leading rusher and maintained a secondary full of pro prospects.

Even more impressive, he’s put a guy on his defensive line each season who’s been near impossible to block and the coach has dared opposing teams to try and run on him—relying on the prodigious talent of Danny Shelton, Vita Vea and Greg Grimes to disrupt things and require automatic double-teams.

With Grimes ready to check out following the Rose Bowl, Petersen pointedly used his latest recruiting class to try and unearth another plumb defensive lineman. According to the recruiting rankings, the coach did well, on Wednesday signing 6-foot-2, 315-pound Jacob Bandes from Antioch, Calif., 6-3, 304-pound Faatui Tuitele and 6-4, 336-pound Sama Pa’ama from Honolulu, Hawaii, and 6-1, 280-pound Noa Ngalu of East Palo Alto, Calif., among 20 who signed letters of intent.

Bandes has the most press accolades coming in, ranked as the nation’s 32nd best overall recruit by 247Sports. Whether he’s that good, or better than the Huskies’ three other DL recruits, remains to be seen. Remember Steve Emtman, the greatest down lineman in school history, arrived in Seattle with no fanfare and had no equal at the height of his college football stay.

The Huskies’ biggest position-area need was linebacker and they signed four, though it’s unclear if any will be ready to play immediately. Laiatu Atu, a 6-4, 272-pound outside linebacker from Sacramento, drew the most attention, flipping his commitment from USC to the UW at the 11th hour. Others are inside linebackers Josh Calvert from Oak Park, Calif., and Alphonzo Tuputala from Federal Way., and outside linebacker Bralen Trice from Phoenix.

The experts pegged this UW recruiting class anywhere from 12th to 15th in what boils down to a big guessing game.

Bios of each, supplied by the school, are as follows:
