Which 'Position U' Does Washington Need to Be to Succeed?

Like the world we live in, how to succeed in college football is always changing and adaptation is required. We are used to hearing the saying, “Offense sells tickets, defense wins games.” But, which "Position “U” does a FBS team really need to be in order to succeed in the modern era of CFB?

When the University of Washington football program is mentioned, one of the first things you think about is probably its stellar defense — the Death Row Dawgs. Washington often has had one of the best defenses in the conference and arguably in the CFB.

In years where offensive or special teams may have red flags or be of concern, it has always been the defense, the secondary specifically, that has been the most reliable.

Reliability and success unfortunately don’t always go hand in hand. The defense can be reliable in getting the offense back on the field, but like other sports, defense can only get you so far — points are needed to win.

LSU won the national championship game with a good defense, but it also was its WRs making huge plays alongside a quarterback, the first overall draft pick of 2020 and Heisman winner, to lead this team.

UW has the talent that is constantly being developed into talented NFL prospects and players who become a large identity to the team. Some could even make the argument that Washington might even be the "DBU" or one of few.

But is being DBU the key to success?

The Huskies had successful seasons making it to three consecutive NY6 games, but each time they came up short of a win. That leads us to the question, would they have won those games if the Dawgs were "QBU" or "WRU" instead?
