Neal Brown gives quarterback battle update #1

The competition for WVU's starting quarterback position has been argued back and forth over the months since Will Grier left Morgantown and it doesn't look like it will stop any time soon. For those looking for some answers, head coach Neal Brown commented on the quarterback situation for the first time in his press conference on Monday,

There's not a whole lot there, and a good bit of it is coach speak, but there are definitely a few things that can be taken. away from coach Brown's words.

First and foremost, it shows that the competition is mostly where it was in the spring with Austin Kendall and Jack Allison out in front and Trey Lowe just a step behind the more experienced players. With the previous staff, it is unknown if Austin Kendall would have even come to WVU, but if he had, Allison and Lowe would have had an advantage after being in the system for a while. However, now that Neal Brown is putting in his own offense, each QB is on a level playing field in that respect.

The next thing that stands out is his comments about Trey Lowe. Fans have learned very quickly that Neal Brown does not often mince words. If he does not believe something, he won't say it for any reason. Therefore, if he says that Trey Lowe is making progress, that means Trey Lowe is making progress. Lowe has an advantage over his competitors due to his running ability, and if he can continue to progress as a passer, he may be the man under center against James Madison.

There are also a couple of notes that are important based on what coach Brown DIDN'T say. Bowling Green transfer Jarret Doege and walk-on Trent Jackson are the other two guys in that quarterback room. Neither one was mentioned, and that means a couple of things.

First, Jarret Doege isn't being counted on to be available to play this season. Doege is currently going through the NCAA waiver appeal process in hopes of being granted eligibility for the upcoming season. However, it appears the coaching staff is not relying on him as a starting option for this season.

Second, Trent Jackson doesn't look like someone who will push the scholarship players this season. A couple of times in the spring, Jackson's name came up for pushing the QBs in front of him. Jackson has the build and size of a D1 quarterback but his skill is a ways behind the more advanced players. He may be an option down the line, but it doesn't look like it will be in 2019.
