Kerry Martin Jr. officially signed with West Virginia

Charleston (WV) defensive back Kerry Martin Jr. has signed with West Virginia.

The 6-foot-2, 188-pound West Virginia native chose the Mountaineers over offers from Army, Marshall and Cincinnati.

Martin Jr. was an iron man athlete in high school, starring as both a quarterback and safety. Though more than capable under center, Martin Jr. will be counted on as an uber-athletic defensive back in Tony Gibson's defense.

A unanimous three-star recruit, Martin Jr. excels in man-to-man and zone coverage yet isn't afraid to load the box and stuff the run. However, he'll be best served as a coverage safety rather than a hybrid linebacker.

The Mountaineers technically have an opportunity for the former first team All-state standout to play as freshman, but with Kenny Robinson Jr., E.J. Brown and Kwantel Raines returning in 2019, it's tough to see Martin Jr. making an immediate impact. Yet given the fact Brown and Raines haven't seen the field much either, it's not out of the question.
