Sayaka Yoshimura and Yuta Matsumura are the 2021 Japanese champions.
Yoshimura’s Hokkaido squad became the fourth different Japanese women’s champions in as many years by defeating their arch-rivals from Kitami, Team Satsuki Fujisawa, in the final.
The result means there will be a Japanese Olympic Trials for women; had Fujisawa won the final, her 2018 Olympic bronze medalists would have qualified directly for Beijing 2022.
On the men’s side, Hokkaido’s Matsumura won his third straight national crown by defeating a surprising junior-aged team skipped by Takumi Maeda in the final.
That result means Matsumura will earn the Japan Curling Association’s nomination to Beijing. All Matsumura has to do is qualify his nation for the Olympic Winter Games at the upcoming world men’s championship in the Calgary bubble next month.
