Former world champ Cavendish withdraws after shoulder injury

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) Former world champion Mark Cavendish of Britain has withdrawn from this year's championship after sustaining a shoulder injury at the Tour of Britain.

Cavendish, who won the rainbow jersey in 2011, made a special trip to Richmond earlier this year to survey the course. While it does not necessarily suit his style, he would have been among the favorites if the race wound up in a sprint finish.

British Cycling technical director Shane Sutton said in a statement that the injury Cavendish sustained about a week ago was worse than initially thought.

Cavendish plans to race in Abu Dhabi next month before wrapping up his season.
