Former world champion Kwiatkowski wins Strade Bianche
SIENA, Italy (AP) Michal Kwiatkowski won the Strade Bianche with a solo break on Saturday for his second victory in the one-day classic.
The Pole had time to slow down around the final wet corners after rain had affected the race for much of the 175-kilometer (109-mile) route, starting and finishing in Siena. Kwiatkowski also won the race in 2014, the year he was world champion.
The Team Sky rider lifted his arms in celebration as he crossed the line 15 seconds ahead of Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet, and 17 ahead of Tim Wellens.
Kwiatkowski had broken away from a leading group of four with 12 kilometers to go and had a maximum gap of 30 seconds.
World champion Peter Sagan abandoned after starting the race feeling unwell.
