The U.S. has now played two matches at the World Cup, and by most measures, they’ve been two of the most thrilling games in the country’s soccer history — but for very different reasons.

Last Monday, the nation erupted in celebration after little-known American defender John Brooks lifted the Americans to a crucial World Cup victory over Ghana. Sunday’s match was setting up to be a similar narrative — a come from behind victory against a heavily favored opponent — until Cristiano Ronaldo happened. You can see the reaction by USA fans in Hattiesburg, who shifted from raucous celebration to utter despair in a matter of seconds, in the video above.
