Arkansas to honor title team vs. team claiming title in same year

The Arkansas Razorbacks will honor their 1964 national championship team before Saturday's game against Alabama. Alabama honored their 1964 national championship team before last month's game against Florida. Wait, what?

Arkansas and Alabama both claim national championships from 1964. For the Tide, it's one of 15 titles they claim. But it's the only one for the Hogs, so they're making a pretty big deal out of the 50th anniversary. The cover of their media guide this season features an homage to the 1964 team.

Alabama was undefeated during the 1964 regular season and finished No. 1 in the AP and UPI polls, which were conducted before any bowl games. Arkansas was No. 2 in both polls. After the Tide lost to Texas in the Orange Bowl and the Razorbacks beat Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl, Arkansas finished first in the Football Writers of America poll.

This is why we have a playoff now.
